IN ORDER to maintain cash flow, the Lami Town Council will work closely with the Local Government Ministry to review certain fees and charges. In his submissions to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), acting council CEO Azam Khan said they had experienced cash flow constraints from time to time.

“We have a budget which we rely upon and work upon to ensure that these constraints are limited,” Mr Khan said.

“We are looking forward to working closely with the Ministry for Local Government in reviewing certain fees and charges to ensure the user pay systems are able to support the council mechanisms, and ensure at the end of the day, the functionality of the municipal council is maintained well.”

Mr Khan said the Suva City Council has been providing human resource management and internal control support to the Lami council.

“That has reduced the loading on the Lami Town Council financially,” he said.

Mr Khan also told the committee some of their policies have been developed and circulated.

“The human resource policy has been developed and circulated; a financial policy manual has also been given.

“The operation policy guideline has also been recently developed and circulated.

“So, basically, these technical guiding documents would have been a grey area, and coming from the Ministry for Local Government, it establishes a benchmark across the municipal councils and also allows us to refer to queries brought in through external audits too.”
