Toulon’s Armitage charged over fight

TOULON – Former England rugby flanker Steffon Armitage is facing charges of violence over a fight in a restaurant in southern France last month.

Armitage, the European club player of the year last season, and Toulon club teammate Xavier Chiocci were questioned by police on Thursday over an alleged attack on a man during an alcohol-fueled party following a win over Leicester in the European Cup.

Both players told investigators they have no memory of what happened that night.

A Toulon club official said Chiocci was released without charge, while Armitage remained in custody overnight.

He faces a local court on February 10.

Toulon will consider disciplinary action pending the outcome of the case.
