Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s national extended side skipper Ratu Filipe Sauturaga says his side is hoping to work on its weaknesses while competing at the Fiji Bitter Lomaiviti 7s tournament which kicked off yesterday.
The side, which goes by the name Fiji Babas in the tournament, thrashed Police Levuka 32-0 in their first pool game and will play their last two pool games today.
“We are happy to be here competing in this tournament because we want to come and find out what our weaknesses are,” he said.
“We saw there has been a lot of tough competition and this is good because these tough local teams will be pushing us to our limits.”
He added the tournament served as a great preparation platform for the side as they prepared for this year’s HSBC Series season and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris later this year.
“This is a very important year for us and we have the Olympic games coming up and we want to defend our gold medal.
“We have a few development players part of the squad and this tournament is good for them to prove themselves to our coaches.”
Meanwhile, he said a handful of their teammates remained in Viti Levu undergoing training ahead of the HSBC SVNS Series.
“Some of our teammates are still in Viti Levu and they will not be attending this tournament but they are still undergoing training back at camp.
“Looking at our first game, I am happy with the performance of our development players and we are hoping to see them better themselves as day two kicks starts tomorrow.”
