Special administrators’ contracts in all of the country’s 13 urban centres ended last week.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa, while confirming this, said the special administrators contracts were not terminated as claimed.

In an interview with this newspaper, Mr Nalumisa said the special administrators were advised well in advance that their contract would end in December.

“The special administrators posts will be announced soon,” he said, adding their contracts would be effective from today. “I cannot divulge any further comment (on the administrators).”

He said municipal elections would be conducted next year but did not give a date.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Local Government, Seema Sharma said she was not in a position to make any comment on the issue because special administrators were appointed by the minister.
