Rise in animal abuse cases alarming

There is an alarming increase in the number of animal abuse cases in Fiji, with videos and photos of abuse posted on social media.

Casey Quimby, the co-founder and managing trustee of Animals Fiji, says while there are no quantifiable records, it is clear from the availability of documentation that, anecdotally, there is an increase of cases being documented and reported online “and to our organisation directly”.

Animals Fiji plays a vital role in advocating for animal welfare through services like veterinary care, population management, and welfare services.

They also work with government agencies and NGOs to promote animal welfare reforms.

“The Government and animal welfare organisations like us at Animals Fiji cannot do it alone,” Ms Quimby said.

“You as an individual have a role to play in ensuring the safety and well-being of animals as we at Animals Fiji continue to act as a voice for the voiceless.”

There is no data on animal abuse numbers, but Animals Fiji is actively working on dog population management.

Improving animal welfare and preventing abuse starts with education and awareness, such as the One Health approach, which recognises the inextricable link between humans, animals, and the environment.

Ms Quimby said the current legislation on animal abuse needed to be enforced and harsher penalties needed to be enforced as well.

“We believe that stricter penalties for animal abuse offences are necessary, but only as part of a comprehensive approach that includes strong enforcement and a commitment to changing attitudes towards animals.”

Ms Quimby is also urging the public to report any form of animal abuse to the authorities and to treat animals within the five freedoms of animal welfare — freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury, or disease, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress.

“If you witness or see any animal abuse cases, Animals Fiji does not have the jurisdiction to prosecute or investigate cases of alleged animal abuse, only the police can do this.

“So, please, urgently report this to your local police station. You will need to bring evidence such as photographs or videos and request that the perpetrator be charged under the Protection of Animals Act.”
