THE Oceania Football Qualifier for the Summer Olympic Games 2024 in Paris promises to be an exciting and competitive event, with eight teams vying for the opportunity to represent the region at the prestigious tournament.

Team Fiji is one of the participants, and they will face tough competition from the likes of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, and others.

The tournament, which will be held in Samoa from February 7 to 19, will feature two groups, each consisting of four teams, Group A includes Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, and American Samoa, while in Group B comprises New Zealand, Tonga, host nation Samoa and Vanuatu.

The draws for the tournament were conducted in Auckland on November 23, and former Football Ferns captain Maia Jackson expressed her excitement at the prospect of competing in the tournament. Jackson emphasized the significance of the Olympic Games and the opportunity it presents for players to fulfil their dreams and goals.

She also noted the significance of the tournament for the host nation, Samoa, as they can test themselves against strong team like New Zealand, this will undoubtedly be a valuable experience for the Samoa team and a chance to showcase their talent on the international stage.

“It’s a big challenge when New Zealand is in your group but there are more resources going into Oceania Football and to be at home, Samoa will have that 12th woman cheering them on. It will be a challenge but one that I am sure they will rise to,” said Jackson.

Group A is expected to be closely contested with the likes of Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea chasing two semi-final spots.
