A cleanup of the mangrove swamp located near the Bailey Bridge in Laucala Beach Estate has been organized for tomorrow.

The site, quite possibly one of the most polluted areas in Suva, is littered with plastic bottles, cans and other rubbish.

Organiser, president of the Fiji College of General Practitioners Dr Rajesh Maharaj said he and a group of volunteers from Laucala Beach and Kinoya would gather in front of the Five Squares shop at 11am before proceeding with the mangrove clean up.

He said the huge pile of plastic bottles and other debris may have thrown in waterways, drains and along the road, and floated downstream before collecting in the mangrove swamp.

Dr Maharaj said he decided to organize the cleanup campaign in a bid to create public awareness about good waste management through the exercise.
