Army has laid the challenge to Police as the members of the disciplinary forces prepare for the annual Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition.
In a beautiful tradition of the Sukuna Bowl, members of both forces convened at the Nasova ground in Suva yesterday for the launch of the 72nd challenge.
Police, in striking fashion, showcased the diverse cultures of their members through traditional attires gracing the ground as they marched on to challenge the men from Delainabua.
In his speech, Republic of Fiji Military Force commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai admitted that Army was still reeling from last year’s loss.
“We have not recovered from last year’s loss. We have had our setbacks through the season, we attempted to defend the Defence World Cup in France but we fell short, and most recently we fell short again in the Escott Challenge,” Kalouniwai said.
“Our quest to get past last year’s defeat has not been on a good note for the RFMF and I will admit that we are still picking up the pieces. I will be honest and most fair to say that on the surface we may not possess the strongest case for victory.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew acknowledged the challenge, adding that Nasova was the rightful place of the Sukuna Bowl.
“This year part and parcel of the Fiji Police Force is to restore bloom back in the organisation, so winning the Sukuna Bowl this year will do just that. I know preparations have been going well and when the dust settles in Nadi, may the best team win,” he said.
“Let’s continue with the annual family affair to manage that bond between the RFMF and the FPF but as I stated Nasova is the ground of the Sukuna Bowl.”
The Sukuna Bowl will begin on November 27 building up to the main rugby event scheduled for December 1 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
