Grace Road’s president Jung Yong Kim (Daniel Kim) has had his citizenship application rejected this week.

Director of Immigration Amelia Komaisavai wrote to Mr Kim on October 19, rejecting his application.

His legal counsel Rajesh Gordon said they had directions from Mr Kim to file an appeal.

“It is ironic that despite purportedly declaring him a prohibited immigrant and purportedly staying unlawfully in Fiji and taking him into detention with the intention of unlawfully extraditing him to Korea, they are dealing with him as if he is lawfully in Fiji,” he said.

“And the citizenship refusal letter is addressed to Mr Kim’s Navua residence when he is in their (Fiji Immigration Departments) prison custody.

“They also acknowledge that he has a lawful right to appeal the refusal which must mean that he is lawfully in Fiji.”

Mr Kim had applied for citizenship in 2019, and he remains in immigration detention.

Ms Komaisavai stated in the letter that Mr Kim could appeal the decision in writing within 14 days to the Citizenship Appeals Tribunal.

• Clarification: In yesterday’s The Fiji Times, the first line of this report stated Mr Kim’s citizenship was revoked. That was incorrect. His application for citizenship was rejected. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused – Editor
