Viliame Mata was “dynamic” against Wales. He made the most carries in the match and literally put his body on the line.

His show won him accolades, from FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Simon Raiwalui. Mata made the most carries with 22, chalking up the third most metres gained with 118.

His hard runs at the opposition saw him only make six passes, not afraid to take a hit.

Raiwalui said “Bill” had been outstanding for the whole campaign.

“He’s led from the front in terms of his play. He’s been dynamic on the field,” Raiwalui said.

“When he first came in, we had to work on a few things in terms of fitness and stuff like that. But he’s applied himself. Fantastic.

“He’s worked hard and he’s getting the results and offering from his play on the field.”

Mata says he will look to emulate his performance when they take on Australia in St Etienne on Monday.

“It’s not so much about revenge (following their loss to Wales), but we reviewed the game against Wales and we know that we have so much that we just didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities.

“Going on to this weekend, we’re gonna accept that, and any opportunity we make we’re just gonna grab hold of it and go through.”

He said he was looking at the opportunity to play fellow Fijians in the green and gold, adding it was always an honour to represent the country.

“It’s just a great challenge for us Fijians to go against our fellow Fijians on the other side, but it doesn’t take away the mindset from going for our first win this weekend,” Mata said.

He said he was happy to be representing his family and the country on the world stage.

“It’s always a great honour to represent the country and to get selected to play for the Flying Fijians.

“It’s an honour just to run on the field and represent your country and family and everyone.”
