Nurses are at the highest risk of burnout in any healthcare system, says Fiji Nursing Association (FNA) general secretary Filomena Talawadua.
Her comments come as a Fiji National University researcher, Shanil Sukul, also spoke about burnout and fatigue as one of the “lesser known” causes of the exodus of nurses from the country.
Ms Talawadua said the most common signs of this burnout was shown in their emotional exhaustion, their concerns over their work conditions and contracts.
Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said he was aware of the results of the research and acknowledged that the findings “are true and real”.
He said they were trying to explore better ways to deal with the issue.
