Dawasamu Secondary School players were crowned queens of schools rugby in Fiji after winning the under-18 Weet-Bix Raluve final.

The side defeated title favourites Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School 14-12 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Both teams played a physical match with all the points scored in the first half. Dawasamu flanker Kesaia Senikuba crossed first to put her school in a 7-0 lead with the conversion coming from Marica Bole.

But the girls from Nabua answered quickly with a brilliant team effort and a try from fly-half Lydia Waqairapoa.

MGM took the lead with another try from a brilliant set piece play and the successful conversion extended their lead to 12-5.

The girls from Tailevu fought back with brilliant offloads which broke the MGM defence to score another converted try which saw them lead by two points at the break.

The second half was entertaining as both teams kept the defensive lines strong, denying each other an opportunity to score.

Victorious coach Akariva Vura said while the game was intense, they were happy to win and take the under-18 Weetbix Raluve trophy back to Tailevu.

“We are very proud, we can see the excitement from the spectators. I think they are super proud of what we have achieved right from the beginning until what we have this far,” he said.
