The Naqeledamu Youth Club of Naqeledamu Village in Tailevu has received a grant of $2500 from Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation aimed at enabling youths to take up contracts for tasks such as grass cutting, compound cleaning, hedging, landscaping and planting in nearby communities and villages.
Vodafone Beyond Funder Committee representative Manarusa Vanabale said the grant wasn’t just a financial contribution, he explained it was also a hand extended in partnership.
“It is essential to remember that ownership and execution of this project rests squarely with the youths,” Ms Manarusa said.
“While we greatly value the guidance of our seniors, it’s the young members of the Naqeledamu Youth Club which will steer its implementation.”
Youth adviser Ratu Salimoni Vulakouvaki said the grant would help steer youths away from illegal activities.
“This grant will go a long way in improving the lives of the youths in the village,” he said.
“Most are unemployed, and this grant and project will allow them to steer away from illegal activities like drugs including drinking grog and alcohol.”
With a total of 25 youths, the club has successfully constructed the village footpath and installed solar lights.
