In the heart of Nadroga province, nested at the border of Nadroga province and Nadi Districts, lies Yako Village in the tikina o Raviravi from the Nakaria tribe.
Yako rugby has been making waves after making a remarkable comeback, captivating the hearts of sports enthusiasts.
Its empowering journey has led the side to hold the esteemed Super Challenge Trophy in the Nadi Rugby Union competition.
In an impressive victory, the Yako rugby team emerged triumphant with a remarkable 31-8 score-line against Saunivalu on July 28 as they showcase their resilience and determination and marked the 11th time for securing the prestigious trophy.
It is a testament to the aspirations shared by many young individuals who yearn to represent Fiji on the global stage.
Its return to prominence has been nothing short of inspiring as players unwavering dedication and commitment reshaped the team’s destiny, propelling them to the top echelons of rugby excellence.
Recognising the importance of youth participation in sports, the village elders decided to foster an environment that nurtured talent and promoted athletic excellence.
“It is important to recognise the significance of engaging the youth in sports as a means to instil discipline, foster camaraderie and provide a platform for personal growth” said by Mateiasi Toma, who is the team captain.
Toma said the journey towards establishing Yako rugby was not without its fair share of challenges, the lack of infrastructure and resources posed obstacles, but the determination and passion of the youth combined with the support of the villagers paved the way for their success.
Yako rugby’s stellar performance has changed the course of focus as it grit to propel the side to the forefront of the rugby landscape.
This achievement not only symbolises the player’s exceptional skills but also serves as a testament to their relentless pursuit of success.
Toma said Yako rugby success would be incomplete without acknowledging the unity and support of the community as the effort put forth by the village elders bore fruit with a surge in talent development and success stories.
“The villagers have rallied behind us, demonstrating enthusiasm and solidarity,” Toma said.
“The support shown during matches has been our inspiration and motivation. It drives us to achieve greater heights.”
The youths, one novice to the sport, honed their skills and embraces the values of teamwork, dedication and perseverance. With each passing year, their prowess on the rugby field grew, and word of their achievement spread beyond the village.
Expressing his appreciation, Toma extends his gratitude to the support received from the vanua, as well as their dedicated coach and trainer Sikeli Lotawa from Yavusania Village.
