Macuata recorded its first win of the 2023 Skipper Cup competition in round three after defeating Yasawa 38-11 in Subrail Park last Saturday.

Macuata was the first to add points to the scoreboard after slotting in four penalty kicks.

Yasawa also managed to successfully convert two penalty kicks before national 7s rep Manueli Maisamoa crossed over to score for Macuata and stretch their lead to 17-6.

Yasawa scored just before halftime to leave the scoress at 17-11.

Yasawa came back stronger after the breather and ran in two tries to lead Macuata 21-17.

However, they were unable to keep their momentum, and this saw Macuata score another three tries in the last 20 minutes to steal the victory 38-21.

Macuata head coach Voreqe Bainimarama said the win boosted the morale of the team as they prepare to face an uphill battle against a strong Nadi side this Saturday.

“We were looking for a win against Yasawa, and I salute the boys for going out there and getting the work done,” he said.

He said Maisamoa’s presence in the team boosted the confidence of the younger players.

“We are blessed to have Maisamoa in the squad, he also scored a try on Saturday, and he played very well throughout the game.

“His presence in the team also boosted the confidence of the younger players in the team, as many of them were excited to play alongside a player of high calibre.”

As they prepare to face Nadi at Prince Charles Park next weekend, Bainimarama says they expect a tough battle, but he is confident his side will get the job done.

“We know it will be a very tough battle, but the boys are willing to go out there and putting their bodies out for Macuata.”

He thanked their supporters for coming out in numbers last Saturday and dedicated their win to them.

In round three matches this week, Nadroga hosts Tailevu at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka on Friday.

On Saturday, Suva will face Nadi at the HFC Bank Stadium while Namosi travels to Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori to face Naitasiri.
