More than 30 schools have been visited so far by the Fiji National University team on its career discovery for high school students program.
Schools from around the Western division were part of the program this month. One of the schools visited by the FNU team was Tilak High School in Lautoka.
Tilak High School head girl, Alisha Nalneesh in a FNU statement said the program was a great opportunity for Year 12 and Year 13 students to be educated on what FNU offered in terms of career studies.
“The session was informative and it really opened the doors for opportunities available to students, especially for the Year 13 students who will be leaving school this year,” she said.
“FNU has practical work for the students which I like, especially the different levels that students can pursue to complete their tertiary level education.”
She said her dream of becoming a speech pathologist or something similar can be pursued at FNU.
“I know that the students of Tilak High School are encouraged and motivated,” she said.
Sharing similar sentiments about the program were Sigatoka Methodist College head prefects, Joel Chand and Sapna Reddy.
The two students wish to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the university as they wish to become doctors in the future.
Joel Chand in a FNU statement said that he was grateful to the university’s team for visiting Sigatoka Methodist College to impart knowledge of the different career pathways and courses that were available at the institution.
“I want to pursue MBBS; I learnt a lot from the presentations by the Fiji National University team which showed how we can enrol into these programs for the betterment of our future,” Chand said.
“Career awareness is so important, especially for us in Year 13. It allows us to become knowledgeable of the courses we can take in the various fields in order to become breadwinners for our families.”
The school’s head girl, Sapna Reddy said she wanted to reward her mother’s sacrifices by fulfilling her family’s dream of becoming a doctor.
“I am the only child, and it is my family’s dream for me to join the medical field, and most probably get a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in the future,” Reddy said.
“The whole school gives a lot of gratitude to the FNU team that provided this vital information.
“The FNU visited our school and disseminated enough knowledge for us to understand whatever career paths we want to pursue and how to pursue it.
“We also learnt of the cut-off marks for the different programs and courses being offered.”
The university team also visited Ba Sangam College, DAV College, Ba Provincial College, Swami Vivekananda College, and the Sigatoka Valley High School on the same day they visited Sigatoka Methodist College.
Students of Nadroga Arya College also had their questions about tertiary education answered by the FNU team during the career discovery team visit to their school.
Nadroga Arya College principal Dhramjit Singh in a statement said awareness on the different career pathways available was crucial for high school students in shaping futures and students’ journeys to successful tertiary education.
Singh was delighted to have FNU at the college to educate the students on their future opportunities.
Nadroga Arya College Year 13 student, Shamiya Khan said she is excited to join FNU to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS).
“The presentation by the team was great. I learned a lot of things, such as the different courses that are being offered at FNU, the entry requirements as well as the different campuses and after learning about all this information today
I wish to study medicine at FNU,” Khan said.
The FNU career discovery teams also visited Cuvu College, Nadi Muslim College, Khalsa High School, Mulomulo Secondary School, and AD Patel College on the same day they visited Nadroga Arya College.
The career discovery teams will be in the Western Division from July 3 to July 14, and the Northern Division from July 17 to July 28.
Virtual sessions are going to be conducted for maritime schools in the first week of August.
