Today a reader, tomorrow a leader” — these are the words of the late American journalist and editor, Margaret Fuller.
Reading is important in any child’s life and having the passion to read allows you to explore and understand many things.
Whether you’re into fictional or non-fictional books, reading improves your focus, expands your vocabulary, improves your memory, and gives stronger analytical thinking and communication skills.
One of the schools in the maritime island that has had a successful Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) program is Lovoni Primary School in Ovalau, Lomaiviti.
The program which has become an integral part of the school’s curriculum is implemented for 15 minutes every morning at the school from Mondays to Thursdays.
The program aims to foster a love for reading among students in Year 1 to Year 8. Lovoni Primary School head of school, Louise Singh said the essence of the DEAR program lies in its simplicity.
“During the 15 minutes, students are encouraged to drop everything and immerse themselves in the world of literature,” Ms Singh said.
“They have the freedom to select their preferred reading materials, whether it be a storybook, a magazine or any other material that captivates their imagination and nurtures their love for reading.
