Rajat Rai was one of the brightest prospects that emerged out from the 52nd Fiji Golf Open championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club earlier this month.

Rai, 15, was runner-up to amateur category winner Abid Hussein in GM Motors sponsored event.

“I am very grateful to be here and I thank all my families who had supported me and I feel I am happy with my performance,” said the New Zealand-based Fijian origin golfer.

“This is the best I have come in a event and hopefully I have a bright future ahead of me and this is only the start,” he said.

The Westlake Boys High School student has an opportunity to make the men’s team Golf Fiji will send to the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands in November.

He said he also competed in the North Island Stroke Play Championship and the South Island Stroke Play Championship in New Zealand plus in the under-19 and under-16 competitions as well.

“My maternal grandfather Kirti Subrail, who was the club captain of Fiji Golf Club in the 90s, was the person who invoked my passion in golf.”

Nadi businessman Abid Hussein rated Rai highly for the future.

“He is a good boy who is playing well and is still coming up, and maybe in another two or three years, he would be very good.

“He just needs to work on his game management.”
