More than 1000 members of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam converged in Nadi yesterday for the annual general meeting and voted for a new executive committee.
The much-anticipated meeting took place seven years after police had to intervene and cancel the last AGM on August 28, 2016, when violence broke out amongst members.
A Court of Appeal order last year allowed the successful conduct of yesterday’s meeting at the Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College in Nadi.
Presidential candidate and life member Damend Gounder said yesterday’s AGM was “done in the most pathetic manner” because delegates were forced to listen to reports from past years.
“Delegates were forced to listen and adopt reports from the last eight years which could have been simplified for them,” Mr Gounder said.
“We spent almost one whole day here with the election taking place very late in the evening and I’m predicting the election results will be out by 10pm (Sunday).
“Those behind this AGM would have done a better job by organising the meeting in a manner that was transparent because what I saw was that the interim committee from the main table were campaigning and were putting people down who have no chance to respond to criticism thrown at them.”
Attempts to obtain comments from interim president Parveen Kumar were unsuccessful.
Results were being counted when this edition went to press.
