Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School’s (MGM) under -17 team created history by winning the Vodafone Fiji Secondary School rugby league finals against Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute (Ba Pro) at Ratu Cakobau Park last week.
The new boys on the block beat the western school 20-12 in front of hundreds of spectators.
The two schools had school supporters on the edge of their seats throughout the 80-minute match in Nausori. The Ba Pro side was no match for the MGM team, which maintained a good performance throughout the match.
Captain of the undefeated side, James Liga, said the praise and glory of winning the match should be given back to God.
Liga said the victory was all because of God’s love and for giving them the strength to win the match.
“We have been saying all along from the very start, all these things were all because of God,” he said.
“We are here by God’s grace and we witnessed his love and strength which enabled us to win.
“Coming here today (May 6) was an honour. “Knowing that we have created history, I just want to thank the boys for their time and effort especially putting in the hard yards in this game.”
Ba Pro walked away with $1500 while MGM took home $2000 as the team’s prizes.
Osea Tuilovoni took the best player for the match award.
In other grades RKS Eels from Delainakaikai both won the under-15 and 19 grades while the Namosi Titans side was crowned the women’s champion for 2023.
