The Qawa rugby team took home the Katonivere Shield after defeating Nakama 26-12 during the Macuata Rugby Union club competition yesterday.

And they have dedicated their victory to their traditional leaders in Qawa Village who have supported the team since the rugby season started.

Team official Samuela Turagatani said the team had been in camp at no cost on players. ”

The traditional leaders through our various mataqali have cooked all our meals and supported us throughout the camping period,” he said.

“Even today (yesterday) the villagers are at the camp and have prepared dinner and grog for the boys and it’s that kind of support that encourages a good game.

“The performance today has been outstanding because there has been unity from home and that’s powerful.”

Although Nakama opened the match with a converted try 15 minutes into the first half, Qawa responded with a converted try of its own.

Ten minutes before half-time, Qawa touched down a unconverted try, taking the scores to 12-7.

In the second half, Qawa scored another two converted tries while Nakama responded with an unconverted try five minutes before the game ended.

Macuata Rugby Union vice president Joji Vuakaca said the competition had been successful.
