Prasad beats brother to win Umu billiard title

Sahil Prasad took out the North West Billiards and Snooker Association (NWBSA) 2023 Viliame Umu Billiards Open Championship at the Lautoka Club on Saturday evening.

He thrashed his elder brother Rahil 152-45 in the final.

In the semi-final, Sahil beat Esala Talebula 151-111 while Rahil accounted for Vikrant Sharma 151-135.

Sahil won $300 and also received the late Viliame Umu Trophy.

Rahil got $150 as the runner-up prize.

Following the win, Sahil acknowledged the NWBSA for hosting the tournament in the memory of Umu who was dubbed as Fiji’s ‘Billiards Master’.

Sahil said Umu was the man through whose coaching he was able to build up his billiards game.

“I saw a lot of enthusiasm from the Western boys during the tournament,” he said.

“The likes of Vinesh Prasad, Savati Natoga, Abdul Javed, Tarun Padyachi and Navneil Maharaj have lifted their standard and are doing well.

“I’m really sure that they will be knocking on the title door soon.”

This was Sahil’s fourth title win of the year.

Padyachi, the NWBSA tournament co-ordinator, thanked all participants and spectators who watched the tournament.

Padyachi said the NWBSA would soon hold clinics to teach the new players the basics of billiards which helps in improving their cue ball play.

Anant Raj, Isireli Kaci, Ronish Singh and Vinesh reached the quarter-finals.
