A total of 56 teams will be participating in three divisions battling it out for a prize pool of more than $15,000 at the first-ever Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s in Lautoka this weekend.

Originating from Mataso Village in Nakorotubu, Ra, the tournament has attracted 32 men’s teams, 16 Under-21 teams and eight women’s teams.

Tournament director James Vunituraga said some big names would be in action at the meet.

“We have teams like both the Police, Blue and White teams, Tabadamu, Army Green making a comeback after nearly six months and Raiwasa Taveuni in the men’s category. So good competition is expected over the two days,” he said.

Vunituraga added the Police Blue side will be favorites in the women’s category while Ba River, Dominion Youth and Tuva Youth are expected to battle it out in the U21 category.

He said the Fiji Bitter tournaments so far this year had been a success and the same was expected for the remaining tournaments.

“We have already had eight tournaments, this will be our ninth. So far it has been a wonderful year for us and we have another five more tournaments after this one. So we are looking forward to another exciting tournament with some great matches.”

The winner of the men’s division walks away $5000 richer while the runner-up receives $2000.

The tournament takes place this Friday and Saturday at Lautoka’s Churchill Park.
