The Takayawas are household names locally in judo, and Shanice Takayawa is hoping of doing well at the 2022 Tahiti Oceania Open next month alongside her uncle, Tevita.

She had just returned from participating at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where she picked up an injury.

“I was a bit double-minded to go for this tournament in Tahiti after suffering from an injury at the Commonwealth Games,” said Takayawa.

“It is an Olympics qualifying event, so I should not make any excuse. I will make use of every competition from now. I am coping with training and my aim going into this competition is to take every fight as it comes and try and better my performance as I progress.”

She said being part of Team Fiji at the COG was a big eye-opener for her and she would use the experiences from there to her advantage.

“It was a wonderful experience for me to be part of the Fiji team with my uncle Tevita.

“The competition was fierce there but they were definitely lessons to be learned.

“I had learned a lot while being there and I will try and incorporate some of my learnings in this upcoming competition.”
