Marist event to test hockey clubs

SUVA Hockey Association will be using the 20th Geotech Drilling Marist Eastgate Memorial Tournament as buildup for next month’s MH Open Championship.

With a number of Suva clubs, including defending champions Ventures, playing in the Marist tournament which starts this Friday, the association will use it as the final trial for the upcoming national event.

Association president Shaun Corrie said the Marist Eastgate Memorial Tournament provided a platform for young players playing in the club level to compete against the best on the turf.

“The Marist tournament always brings best competition and being the last club tournament on turf, everybody looks forward to it so that they have the last bragging rights of the year,” Corrie said.

Corrie, who is also part of the national coaching panel, said the Fiji Hockey Federation also used the Marist tournament for selection of national teams.

“The tournament is also used as an event where the national coaches can see all players because the Western teams usually come for this tournament too,” he said.

“The final selection for the national squads is made next month so the tournament gives us a good view of the potential national reps.”

Corrie expects a tough competition this weekend and hopes Suva clubs will reign again this year.
