Update: 3:42PM Although gone from our TV screens, Breaking Bad was still very present at the Emmys.
Nearly a year after wrapping up, the drama has another nice going-away present. It is the winner of the Emmy Award for best drama series.
It was the second straight win in the category for the dark tale of chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White, who was played by Bryan Cranston.
Cranston also won his fourth Emmy Award for best actor in a drama, Anna Gunn won the Emmy for best supporting Actress and Aaron Paul took home the Best Supporting Actor Emmy. The series also was awarded the Emmy for best writing. Fans of Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage were not impressed.
Following the Emmy’s in memoriam segment, Crystal appeared on stage at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre to honour Williams, who was found dead in his Northern California home on August 11. A luminous image of the late comedian hovered overhead.
“He made us laugh, big time,” said Crystal.
After Williams’ apparent suicide, Crystal simply wrote on Twitter of his longtime friend and Comic Relief co-host: “No words.”
But Crystal found moving words to remember Williams on Monday, recalling family gatherings, ballgames and nights on stage together.
“I used to think if I could put a saddle on him and stay on him for eight seconds, I was gonna do OK,” said Crystal.
“It’s very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives,” Crystal continued. “He was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy.”
Crystal concluded by reflecting on the eternal glow Williams would continue to give off, long after he was gone.
“And you’ll think to yourself: Robin Williams, what a concept.”
What else happenend:
* Modern Family took out the Emmy Award for best comedy series. It’s the fifth year in a row the hit ABC series has bagged the big prize, tying a record winning streak set by Frasier.
* Seth Meyers opened the show making a point that the main networks have been overtaken by cable channels and Netflix. He ended his opening monologue with a metaphor, in which TV is that easy “booty call” that’s always up for it, while movies are that high-maintenance “diva” who wants you to actually get up and drive over to her house. “So thanks anyway movies, but I’m sticking with TV.”
* The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons has won his fourth Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series and thanked his late father for encouraging him to be an actor. Julia Louis-Dreyfus made it a hat trick, taking out Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Veep for the third time. On her way to the stage she and Bryan Cranston shared a passionate kiss.
