The Ono-i-Lau women’s cricket team is looking to make a huge impact in their first year of participation in the inaugural National Women’s Cricket tournament.

The tournament started at Albert Park in Suva on Tuesday and ends on Saturday.

Coach Nemani Bale believes the cricketers have what it takes to win the tournament.

“In the first round of games which was played yesterday (Tuesday), we won both of our games and I am happy about the results and our performance,” he said.

“The ladies will be facing Suva this morning (yesterday) and I know that they will give their best shot as we all know that the Suva women’s side are heavyweights in this competition”.

Bale also mentioned the short time frame given to build a formidable side.

“I was approached just one week before the tournament was supposed to start, so preparations were not properly done but so far all has been going good for the side”.

The team is consists of women from different parts of the country.

“We have a few ladies representing the island of Ono-i-Lau, Kabara, Kadavu and a young lady from the province of Tailevu.

“So the team is well-diversed and there is a great bond within the camp.”

The Ono-i-Lau islander is calling on the support of its people to get behind the women as they try to achieve a mammoth task ahead.

“Firstly I would like to thank the people back in the islands for giving their permission and blessings for the ladies to use the name of the island.

“I would like to encourage the people of Ono-i-Lau who are in Suva and nearby areas to come and support the ladies in their free time as I know you might have busy schedules. “Your support will be of great help to the ladies,” he added.
