Since the beginning of 2021, Japan has contributed $535 million to Fiji, says Japan’s ambassador to Fiji Kawakami Fumihiro.

He made the comment during the exchange of notes and grant agreement signing on Tuesday at Nasilivata House, Samabula, for the reconstruction of the $60 million Tamavua-i-Wai bridge .

“This funding includes the loan for Fiji Airways through ADB worth about $50 million,” he said.

“As well as phase one and two of our Emergency COVID-19 support loan worth about $400 million in total.”

Mr Fumihiro said Japan would be providing new support to the Ministry of Infrastructure under its Technical Cooperation Project through JICA.

“This is for capacity building of non-revenue water reduction, which will address the water supply demands in the Western Division.”

Mr Fumihiro said he had formalised the Grassroots Grant Assistance project to Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) two weeks ago.

“This is the first time that Japan implements the Grassroots Grant Assistance with WAF.

“I hope this project will strengthen our partnership in the area of water supply, and will pave the way to future projects in remote islands.”
