Villagers of Nabubu in the district of Namuka in Macuata have been urged to make good use of the developments carried out by the Government and increase productivity to boost the contribution of the rural economy towards the national GDP in the long term.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu stressed this in a statement at the completion of the upgrade of the 1.2km track previously used by the villagers.

Mr Seruiratu said as the ministry responsible for implementing rural development initiatives, it was pleasing to note that developments carried out by the Government were truly making a difference in the lives of rural Fijians.

Nabubu Village headman Kalivereti Vuaka thanked the Government for helping them out and said the improved road had made accessibility easier for the 78 villagers, and more importantly for fellow villagers living with disabilities.

“Before, due to the condition of the track, cars could not come into the village. And if we wanted to travel to Labasa, we had to wake up very early and walk to the next village at around 4:30am to catch the bus to Labasa,” Mr Vuaka was quoted saying in the Government statement today.

“But this road has made things easier for us and for that we thank the Government. The access road has assisted farmers and fishermen a lot in terms of accessibility to farms and the transportation of farm produce and seafood to markets.”

The Nabubu Village access road was funded under the ministry’s Community Access Roads, Footpaths and Footbridges (CARFF) program at a cost of $49,632.
