Nadi-based non-governmental organisation Strivers Club has assisted families in Nadi with more than 500 food packs in the past month alone, says the NGO president Prathika Gounder.

“We are blessed with all the assistance from people and organisations from both in Fiji and abroad for supporting our work towards the needy in the society,” she said.

Ms Gounder said those families who were living on margins of the poverty line had dipped further below, with the pandemic exacerbating their struggles.

“Some families that we visited had literally nothing to eat except for the water they had and it really is heartbreaking.”

The University of Fiji lecturer said life had gone real tough for many people, even for those who were making some money from their backyard farming.

“We are going right to the people’s doorsteps during our distribution and seeing firsthand the problems that they are facing.”

Ms Gounder said the NGO is led by their founder, Amith Kumar, who is also an advisory councillor in Nadi and a Hindu priest as well.
