New Zealand Football recorded its largest surplus in seven years in 2020, but already has plans for spending it.

The governing body revealed in its annual report on Friday that it made $2.6 million last year, largely due to the lack of international activity that resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic.

It transferred $2.5 million of that surplus to its international teams reserve fund, leaving it with a surplus after transfers of $127,000, and has budgeted to draw $2.4 million from that fund to cover the costs of international activity in 2021.

Chief executive Andrew Pragnell said the budgeted figure was likely to be reduced somewhat in reality, as there had been no such activity in the first five months of the year.

And there won’t be any in June either, but the Football Ferns national women’s team and the OlyWhites national under-24 men’s team are set to take part in the Tokyo Olympics in July, where they will bring an almost 500-day wait for any national team activity to an end.
