Ancillary staff paid from the Free Education Grant should continue to receive their salaries, despite schools being closed.
Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar clarified this in a statement after receiving complaints that the management of some schools have been refusing to pay their ancillary staff, since schools were closed as per the directive of the Ministry, due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
“We have received complaints where the management of some schools are refusing to pay ancillary staff during this time – this is not acceptable,” Ms Akbar said.
“It is rather unfortunate to see this level of insensitivity being shown towards the needs of these staff, especially during a time like this, when many people are facing tremendous hardships,” she said.
Ancillary staff includes as typists, gardeners, cleaners, librarians, handymen and bursars, should be paid their full salaries.
