Eighteen students were awarded scholarships under the Fiji National University’s Student Association (FNUSA) scholarship scheme in a handover ceremony at the university’s Nasinu campus yesterday.
While handing over the cash scholarships to the students, Minister for Education, Ms Rosy Akbar urged students to continue to make use of the assistance being provided to them.
“Some students tend not to complete their units and drop out, whether it’s a loan scheme or scholarship scheme. I cannot give you the numbers but we have recorded a large number of students that do not make it to graduation.” she said.
“Some drop out because they fail their units and have do it all over again which comes at an extra cost.”
The recipients were encouraged to use the assistance they were provided to achieve their dreams while it was available.
The FNU Student Association began its scholarship scheme a year ago to assist students in the current post pandemic conditions and the natural disasters that had affected Fijian families.
Fifteen students in the Undergraduate Program were awarded scholarships with three recipients from each of the five colleges.
Three Post Graduate students were also selected to receive scholarships.
