The public is advised that the requirements for importing second-hand motor vehicles into Fiji are strictly for hybrid and petrol/ diesel/ CNG and LPG vehicles.

The Fiji Revenue and Customs chief executive officer, Jonetani Vuto, in a public notice highlighted that as per Schedule 3 of the Customs (Prohibited Imports and Exports) Regulations 1986 — only second-hand motor vehicles allowed into Fiji were hybrid and petrol/diesel/CNG/LPG vehicles.

The hybrid vehicles are to be five years or less from the year of manufacture and must be Euro 4 compliant while the petrol/diesel/CNG/LPG vehicles must only be Euro 4 compliant.

On the requirements of importing second-hand vehicles into Fiji, FRCS highlighted that there should be export certificates or deregistration documents presented.

There also needs to be an applicant’s ID (taxpayer identification number (TIN)/voter registration card/driving licence), a Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Centre (JEVIC) report (Australia, New Zealand and Japan imports) and a certificate of compliance to Euro 4 standards if JEVIC is not available in the country of export.

There also needs to be an authorisation letter by the importer for obtaining the import licence on their behalf and any other document as required for the purpose of import licence.

Mr Vuto highlighted in the public notice that written off vehicles cannot be imported into Fiji.

“FRCS would like to advise people intending to import left hand drive vehicle to get approval from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) prior to importation,” he said.

On processing of import licence, FRCS advises importers to obtain the import licence prior to loading and shipping of vehicles for Fiji to avoid delay in Customs clearance and additional re-exportation costs, if the vehicle is prohibited.

The notice highlighted that importers also need to lodge applications for import licence well in advance together with the mandatory formalities for rapid and expedited Customs clearance.
