THE State has filed an application to use Skype for a witnesses from New Zealand in the matter involving Canadian national Joshua Aziz Rahman.

Mr Rahman is facing charges relating to the alleged possession of $30 million worth of cocaine. He appeared yesterday before judge Justice Daniel Goundar.

Defence lawyer Sharoneel Deo told court they objected to the use of Skype and the relevance of the New Zealand-based witness in the case.

Justice Goundar said he would have to decide on both issues after hearing from both parties.

He said at this stage, he was not clear on what had occurred in New Zealand in relation to Joshua’s father and other people connected to the case.

He told both parties that the real issue would be the admissibility of the evidence.

The State was to point out exactly the specific evidence they would be adducing from the witness.

Mr Rahman is alleged to have had in his possession 39.5kg of cocaine in February 2019 in Caubati.

The case has been fixed for a two-week trial from March 22.
