SHERATON Fiji Resort’s brand new Denarau Island Convention Centre has been recognised as an asset for Fiji and the South Pacific, says area general manager Fiji and Samoa Shane Cunning.
The new $3.5m centre which has the capacity to host 1500 guests was opened last week. “It is designed cyclone proof and sound proof as well so it’s an event centre which will be able to withstand climatic extremeties and also ensure our guests are not disturbed when events are hosted there”, he said.
“It’s an asset more than just for Sheraton, even though it’s located at Sheraton, it’s for Denarau, it’s for Fiji and given that I’m told its the largest in the South Pacific as well.
“Hopefully we’ll get a lot more big events and become a bit more of a hub for larger events.” He said that in the last three months they picked up six mega events for this year prior to being completed.
“You know you build it and they’ll come.
“It will benefit Denarau, not just one or two hotels, it’ll bring more people to Fiji, it is more of a hub for big events that were normally held somewhere else. “The key attribute will be Denarau Island having a venue with the capacity to host large local, regional and international gatherings such as conferences, seminars, symposiums, meetings and events enabling a greater scope of events that will benefit Denarau Island and Fiji as a whole.”
Mr Cunning said Sheraton and the Denarau Island Convention Centre was looking forward to hosting the Fijian Tourism Expo next week.
