Nadi International Airport has been declared a safe travel destination amidst the global increase of COVID-19.
The declaration was made yesterday by Airports Council International which has its own health assessment team.
Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was a proud leader in Savusavu yesterday, describing this achievement as part of the many untold works done by locals behind the COVID-19 scene.
“The Airports Council International have their own health assessment checks and today (yesterday), Nadi airport has been given accreditation so it is a safe travel destination,” he said.
“Now that’s the first step and the second step is having the Ministry of Health work with Fiji Airways to set up a second testing facility in Nadi.
“That is critically important and we are the only independent country in the South Pacific that has a certified testing lab, apart from the French territory countries.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said discussions with Australia and New Zealand continued on the Bula Bubble and key source markets.
“Australia is more advanced in terms of discussion and New Zealand has just finished their elections. And so we are currently talking to Australia and a lot of work is being done behind the scenes,” he said.
“We are also in discussion with Australia in particular to the Bula Bubble and we’re talking to the technical team and the COVID Response Taskforce.
“The Bula Bubble is basically people travelling to Nadi and getting tested before and after boarding the plane and when they arrive in Nadi, they are transported to their destination of holiday but are contained there and once tested negative, can freely visit.
“No one comes to Fiji to spend a holiday in Fiji and return to their countries and get quarantined again.”
