Jorginho scored two penalties – the second after Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta stopped Tammy Abraham taking it – to complete a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea’s lead was secured by Ben Chilwell scoring on his league debut for Chelsea from Abraham’s flick-on in the 50th minute and the leftback’s cross set up Kurt Zouma for a header in the 66th.

Jorginho added the third from the penalty spot in the 78th after Abraham was tripped by Tyrick Mitchell at an empty Stamford Bridge.

Abraham hoped to get on the scoresheet when Kai Havertz was fouled by Mamadou Sakho. But the striker’s bid to take the spot kick was overruled by Azpilicueta intervening to hand the ball to Jorginho, who converted in the 82nd.

“No problems, it’s dealt with,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said. “I want leaders and I don’t mind a bit of conflict. If Tammy wanted to take it because he wanted to goal … then he can get put in his place a little bit.

“I appreciate his eagerness because his performance deserved a goal but those are the rules. You don’t just jump ahead in the [penalty takers’] list.”

American forward Christian Pulisic came off the bench in the 83rd minute for his first appearance since recovering from a right hamstring injury sustained in Chelsea’s FA Cup final loss to Arsenal in August.

Chelsea have seven points from four games and Palace are on six.

James Rodríguez scored twice and assisted fellow Colombian Yerry Mina’s header as Everton beat Brighton 4-2 in the Premier League on Saturday for a fourth successive win at the start of the Premier League season.

Coupled with progress in the League Cup, Everton has made their best start to a season since the 19th century with seven wins out of seven. Everton, which last won the English championship in 1987, is top of the early standings.

Everton has the leading scorer across Europe’s top five leagues after Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed the hosts in front in the 16th minute with his ninth goal of the season in all competitions.

The prolific form has earned Calvert-Lewin a first call-up to England but there was less joy for another member of Gareth Southgate’s squad – goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The England No. 1 was at fault for Neal Maupay’s equaliser, failing to hold Leandro Trossard’s volley hammered into the turf.

He was grateful to the club’s Colombia connection as Rodríguez’s free kick presented Mina with his first Goodison Park goal in first-half stoppage time.

Rodríguez then took his tally to three goals since signing from Real Madrid with a pair of far-post finishes in the second half from crosses by Richarlison’s replacement, Alex Iwobi, and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

“He’s a top player and when he gets on the ball you see that quality he’s got,” Calvert-Lewin said of Rodríguez. “He draws people in and opens space up for other players and for me, as a centre forward, he creates chances and that’s all I can hope for.”

Yves Bissouma volleyed in a late consolation for Brighton, which has three points from four games.

Leeds frustrate Man City

Pep Guardiola was frustrated by the strength of guru Marcelo Bielsa’s Premier League newcomers as Manchester City was held 1-1 by Leeds on Saturday.

At a rainy, empty Elland Road – due to coronavirus restrictions – Rodrigo came off the bench in the second half to equalize with his first goal since joining Leeds ahead of the season in a club-record transfer.

The Spaniard pounced on a mistake by City goalkeeper Ederson to turn the ball home from close range in the 59th minute.

It cancelled out the 16th-minute goal from Raheem Sterling, who cut inside on the left edge of the penalty area and drove a low shot inside the far post.

Guardiola, an admirer of Bielsa’s tactical ability, believed both teams deserved a point.

“It was good, huh! … it’s good when both teams want to attack … a good game, a fair result … unfortunately we could not win but we move on from here,’’ he said in a post-match television interview.

“I am not complaining for one second … it is not easy to play against them … but we had chances in the first half to kill the game … and in the last 15 minutes we were better.”

Leeds are in fifth place on its return to the top division after 16 years. But 2018 and 2019 champion Manchester City are eight points behind leader Everton in 10th place, albeit with a game in hand.
