Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries is advising members of the public to be wary of ciguatera fish poisoning.
This comes after the ministry recently received information about a case of ciguatera fish poisoning in Cakova Village, Moala Island, in the Lau Group.
Director for Fisheries Mere Lakeba said the toxin could not be detected in the fish by appearance.
“It can neither be prevented by freezing and cooking,” said Ms Lakeba.
“Ciguatera toxin is produced by a type of micro algae or dinoflagellates, called Gambierdiscus toxicus.
“It can only be detected in humans through consumption of infected fish.”
Members of the public are advised that when buying fish, they needed to be wary of certain fish that could contain these poisonous toxins like Ogo, Donu Saloa, Dokonivudi, Kake Sailoa, Bati, Regurawa, Daniva, Sumusumu, Dabea, Delabulewa and Utouto to name a few.
