Sisilia Ravusou, 65, couldn’t contain her happiness when basic food items were delivered to her doorstep at Bilo settlement outside Lami yesterday.
She was among about 20 families assisted with cartons of basic food items by a group of bikers, Freedom Riders in collaboration with officials of Royal Suva Yacht Club.
Mrs Ravusou said her family had been affected because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She said her husband who was a taxidriver had struggled to earn an income.
“For days, we struggled to buy basic food items such as sugar, flour and cooking oil because the money my husband earned in a week was not enough,” Mrs Ravusou said.
“We have been trying to get whatever is available around us to feed our family.
“But, the carton of basic food items was like gold to us.”
RSYC commodore Spencer Ah Sam said the aim was to assist families who had been affected by the crisis.
“We worked with Freedom Riders and came up with this idea to assist the affected families in informal settlements within Lami,” he said.
“So we are looking at helping more families in the future.”
Among the recipients was Rupeni Temo, 65, of Navikinikini settlement.
He said the gifts would be a great assistance to his family during this difficult time.
