RESOURCE owners in Vitogo, Lautoka, have been assured that maintenance work on a floating dry dock owned by the Carpenters Group will not have a major impact on surrounding areas.
The project, spearheaded by the Industrial and Marine Engineering Ltd (IMEL), is expected to be carried out next month following approvals from the Department of Environment.
IMEL operations supervisor Abdul Janif said this was the second time the company would be carrying out maintenance work on the dry dock.
He said Lautoka was selected because Carpenters had a foreshore lease.
He said water blasting would be done in Suva before the vessel was brought to Lautoka.
David Singh, the director of WesEng Consulting Ltd, said the assessments on the project confirmed no major effect on the environment.
“We have done our own water testings but of course, the Environment Department will be doing their own assessments and their own monitoring of the project before and after it begins,” he said.
