FIJI’S heavyweight boxing champion James Singh will leave no stones unturned next weekend when he fights Herman Ene Purcell for the World Youth Heavyweight title.

Singh wrote his name on the record books as one of the youngest boxers to win the heavyweight title in the country and through his determination, perseverance and sacrifice, the Votua lad from Nadroga wants to pursue an international title not only for his family but for his country.

The 25-year-old professional boxer said he learnt a few things that made him to be a champ and he would continue to practise those beliefs as he pursued a brighter future in his boxing career.

“First and foremost is my faith in God, I’ve met opponents who are more experienced and tougher than me but I kept my faith strong knowing anything is possible if I believe in God.

“Secondly is having the positive mindset and never underestimate my opponent. Your mental and physical preparation before your fight is important and that is why many boxers try and threat their opponents verbally before the fight, so that they could get emotionally and mentally challenged and fight out of anger rather than your combination,” said Singh.

Through his initiative of becoming the best in the country and targeting the region’s best, Singh has opened up his Votua Boxing Club so he could develop the sport so interested individuals in the area could join the sport of boxing.

Singh is confident of a win next weekend and he rates this title fight as one of the most important fight of his boxing career.

“I’m the number one heavyweight in the country as I’ve cleared all the big names in Fiji like former champ Petero Qica and Jonasa Kavika.

“I’m the current WBF Australasian champion and will be fighting for the vacant WBF World Youth Heavyweight title,” he said.

Singh has a record of 10 fights and two losses whereas his next Aussie opponent has a record of 24 fights with 16 wins and eight losses.

He leaves for Australia next Wednesday to represent Fiji with one goal and that is to return victorious.
