GOLF Fiji has set out its 2020 national calendar and will host seven major tournaments which will be held around the country.
The major tournaments include the Fiji Amateur Mixed Foursomes, the Fiji Amateur Foursomes (36 holes), the East versus West Championship (36 holes), the Eastern Amateur Championship (54 holes), the Western Amateur Championship (54 holes), the Fiji Amateur Championship (54 holes) and the prized Fiji Open Championship.
Golf Fiji tournament director Rohit Chandra said they would like each member club to have the opportunity to host at least one national tournament during the year.
He said world amateur golf ranking events have a strict criteria whereby in order to accord ranking points, these events needed to be held on an 18 holes golf course.
“This year there will be four Golf Fiji tournaments which have world amateur ranking points,” Chandra said.
“They include the Fiji Open Championship, the Fiji Amateur Championship, the Eastern Amateur Championship and the Western Amateur Championship.
“Since the golf club courses affiliated to Golf Fiji with the nine holes layout cannot host these four ranking events, the first bidding privilege for the Fiji Amateur Mixed Foursomes Championship
and Fiji Amateur Foursomes Championship will be accorded to those in that category.”
Golf Fiji has also decided to revive the East versus West Championship after a lapse of a few years.
Chandra said they would bring back the challenge to spark up old rivalry and healthy competition between the clubs in both divisions.
“The last East versus West Championship was held in Fiji Golf Club a few years back with West Team winning the major team title.
This year we would like to provide the opportunity for a club in Western Division to host it.”
