THE GOSPEL School of the Deaf commemorated Deaf Awareness Week today, with the theme on Sign Language Rights for all.
Officiating at the event, Fiji Times Pte Ltd general manager Christine Lyons said raising awareness and improving access to services at the primary level could help reduce the prevalence and adverse impacts of hearing loss.
She said this was where The Fiji Times came in as a medium for the dissemination of relevant information that was hoped to create awareness of issues faced by those with hearing impairments.
School headteacher Nirmal Mudaliar said sign language was not only for those who were deaf.
“It should not be confined to them only, it’s a form of communication and it would be wonderful if everyone took time out to learn how to do sign language so that it would be easier for deaf people to communicate with them,” Ms Mudaliar said.
The school has a total roll of 55 students and its youngest student is a 2-year-old.
