OLYMPIC gold medallist Viliame Mata wants to open another page to his own piece of history to be part of the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians team that will create wonders in the Rugby World Cup in Japan next month.

The Yasawa lad was part of the historical Fiji rugby 7s team that won the gold medal in the Rio Olympics in 2016 and his next goal is to help his teammates do the same for the Flying Fijians in the Rugby World Cup.

Mata said to be part of the team was an achievement itself and he was grateful being selected into the squad to the world cup.

“I’m really grateful and happy to be called in as one of the players to represent Fiji to the world cup and it’s an honour for me to play for Fiji and it has been very emotional and a tough journey,” said Mata.

The Scotland-based rugger is one of the four Olympic gold medalists in the Flying Fijian squad to the World Cup.

“The Fiji 7s team is different from the 15s team because Fiji has created many histories in the World Sevens Series and winning the Olympics, World Cup and the Series but I want to create history with the Flying Fijians to win Fiji’s first-ever Rugby World Cup (Webb Ellis trophy),” he said.

“It’s not about your fame and glory or your club but it’s about doing your best for the country when you’re needed the most and I will give my best for my country in Japan next month.”

Semi Kunatani, Josua Tuisova and Leone Nakarawa are the three other Olympians in the team.
