RANEESHA Shelvina Chand, 15, believes students are more interested in social media than learning their culture and traditions.

She said she planned to use the 2019 Penang High School Diamond Jubilee Carnival to encourage her peers to learn the importance of preserving their customs.

“We need to value our culture because, in this modern age, students are more into technology and being on social media,” the Year 10 student said.

“Technology can be good if used the right way, but I believe that we are slowly losing our values and customs because of the amount of time we spend online.

“As a young person, I think that we should dedicate more time to learning about our customs, traditions and religion.”

She said Penang High School had a rich history and was dedicated to instilling important values in its students.

“I am grateful that we will have a special Sangam night during our diamond jubilee celebrations and I hope that everyone can learn about their rich history.”

Raneesha is sponsored by Dipsha Home Builders.

Funds raised during the three-day carnival will be used to construct a new school building.
