Experts help schools rugby

THE Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union president, Setareki Merekula acknowledged rugby experts in their involvement in schools lifting the standard of the competition during the Vodafone Super Deans Championship quarter-finals on Saturday.

Merekula said compared with previous years, rugby competition within secondary schools continued to impress officials and spectators.

“We have experienced another level of rugby competition at secondary school level,” he said.

“What we can say is that we have more expectations from the schools after seeing the results from Cuvu College, Marist Brothers, Queen Victoria and the match between Ratu Kadavulevu School and Latter-day Saints.

“We’ve witnessed the outcome of the contribution of experts to the schools. We will be expecting a tougher competition in the semi-finals and also from next year.”

The involvement of the Fiji Rugby Union officials in the competition will lift the standard of rugby in schools and also on the development of grassroots level that will benefit the national rugby team in the future.

The Deans Tropy semi-finals will be held at Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park this Saturday.

The Cuvu College U18 team will take on Ratu Kadavulevu School while Queen Victoria School meets Marist Brothers High School.
