THE newly-launched Colo-i-Suva forest park wildlife book contains records of seven unique plants and animals in the world which can be found in the park.
This was revealed by Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu during the launch of the book at the Suva Museum today.
He said this was a great snapshot of what was conserved in Fiji in terms of flaura and fauna.
“Some of the unique species found in the park include the tree frog, the masked shining parrot and the golden dove, all of which are found only in Fiji with the shining parrot and golden dove found only in Viti Levu,” Mr Naiqamu said.
“The Fiji longhorn beetle (Xixuthrus heros), which is the second largest beetle in the world, is also found in the park.
“The Masiratu tree in the family “Degeneriaceae” is endemic to Fiji and is found in the park. The palm Balaka microcarpa which is also endemic to Fiji.”
He adds the books will be a much-needed resource for environmental and educational awareness for students, members of the public, tourists and researchers.
The book was sanctioned by the University of the South Pacific, Ministry of Forestry, National Trust of Fiji and the Fiji Museum.
