XAVIER College student Shawntell Lockington broke a 10 year record in the senior girls high jump during the Coca Cola Games Ba Zone competition at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday.
The 17-year-old student jumped a height of 1.70 metres smashing the record of 1.66m set in 2009 by a student of Khalsa College.
She fell just short of the national record high jump of 1.71m which she set during the final trials for the 2017 Mini Pacific Games.
The Year 13 student from Nasalia Village in Kadavu aims to break the national record at the 2019 Coca-Cola Games.
Lockington said she was ready for the pinnacle event for secondary schools athletics in the country.
“I jumped 1.70m and the national record is 1.71m, so I will try my best to better it,” Lockington said.
She paid tribute to her coach Asish Chand for helping with her training.
“I have the best coach and with that I think I will be able to achieve a national record.”
Lockington will be one of the athletes from Ba to lookout for during the Coca-Cola Games which will be held at the ANZ Stadium in Suva from April 16-19.
