MEMBERS of the public have been urged to await the outcome of investigations surrounding the drugged and almost alleged abduction of a 13-year-old boy in Saweni, Lautoka, on Saturday.

Save the Children Fiji chief executive officer Iris Low-McKenzie made the comments after a Facebook post detailing the alleged incident went viral on social media yesterday.

She said people should be aware of what they posted on social media because it was easily picked up in children’s news feeds

“The public should also be encouraged to wait until the true details of the case is revealed before circulating the information so as to not cause widespread alarm for children,” she said.

Ms Low-McKenzie added children would always access the internet for various reasons, however, it was the responsibility of carers and parents to be proactive in educating children about online safety and the type of information that was accessed.

She said parents and guardians should use these types of incidents to talk to children about the risks, reality in Fiji and how to make responsible decisions.
